3 Ways to Reset Forgotten Windows Administrator Password

3 Ways to Reset Forgotten Windows Administrator Password

Click the image to open in full size.
Passwords, passwords, passwords….something we are going to have deal with as one of our common annoyances for some time to come. Their necessary evil provides another layer of protection for your bank, your online shopping, your tax software and of course the entire operating system. We have so many passwords these days, that we have websites and password managers like LockCrypt and Clipperz, dedicated solely at helping you manage your passwords.
Even with the ability to store and retrieve your security, it does no good if the operating system is inaccessible. Ignoring your PC for a few years, removing a computer from a domain, or simply needing administrative rights on a PC are just a few reasons that the admin password may need to be reset. With Microsoft’s improved security over the last few years, it became more difficult to resent Windows administrator password. However, there are still several ways to get around it and I am bringing you three of the easiest ways to reset forgotten windows password for XP, Vista and Server 2003.

1. Reset Windows Admin Password with Ubuntu
Ubuntu has become, far and away, the most popular distribution of Linux in the world. Its ease of installation and use makes it the ‘go to’ operating system for an open source alternative. In this case you don’t even have to install the OS. You simply use the Live CD that is included with the burned ISO of Ubuntu.
Here are the instructions for resetting the Windows administrator password using Ubuntu Linux.
(Internet Connection Required)
1. Go to Ubuntu and download the latest ISO of the operating system.
2. Use one of the free ISO burning applications to create a bootable Ubuntu CD. Of course you’ll need another PC in order to do this.
3. Use the Live Ubuntu CD to boot into the live version of the OS.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
4. Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.
5. Then Settings>Repositories
6. Once the ‘Software Sources’ window appears, make sure you select ‘Software restricted by copyright or legal issues’, then click close.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
7. Click reload on synaptic package manager.
8. Click Search, and type in ‘chntpw’.
9. Once the ‘chntpw’ app is found, right-click on it and ‘mark for installation’.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
10. Click “Apply on Summary Window” and also to confirm changes.
**Remember an internet connection is required for the above steps. If there is no availability for a connection, a USB flash drive will be required.**
12. Next, we must mount the Windows drive. In Ubuntu, go to Places> Select the appropriate drive.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
13. The final step of the process is actually resetting the password via the Linux terminal.
14. In Ubuntu go to Applications>Accessories>Terminal.
15. Type ‘cd /media/disk/WINDOWS/system32/config/’ in the terminal window.
16. Type ’sudo chntpw SAM’
17. This by default will change the Administrator password. If you would prefer to change a particular user. Type ’sudo chntpw -u username SAM’.
18. Afterwards, you’ll see a long display of information, most of which can be ignored.
19. The next step is to actually reset the windows password. It is recommended to make the password blank with an asterisk * .
20. You’ll then have to confirm the change with a Y, and reboot.

2. With Barts PreInstalled Environment
Bart’s PreInstalled Environment has been a popular method on offline troubleshooting for Windows System Administrators for some time now whether it be for disk recovery, malware removal or in this instance, password removal. It’s a bootable operating system, just like the Ubuntu Live CD, but with more of a Windows-like feel.
Below are the instructions for using a small EXE file called Password Renew within the PE environment.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
(XP CD Required – If your Windows drive is SATA, you may need to follow additional instructions on the PEBuilder site)
1. Go Bart’s website and download the ISO for the PreInstalled Environment.
2. Download Password Renew.
3. Open PEBuilder and for the Windows directory, select the location of the i386 directory on your XP disk. Under the custom directory, select the directory that holds the PasswordRenew.exe file. Select a title for your CD and finally create a name for your ISO file. I’d recommend creating an ISO over burning directly to the CD, because of problems that may arise.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
4. Browse to the A43 File Management Utility.
5. Once there, you should browse your CD drive and find your custom directory created in step three.
6. Open Password Renew.
Click this bar to view the full image.
Click the image to open in full size.
7. This program is very straight forward. Simply press ‘Select Target’ and browse to your Windows directory.
8. Once there, you can will see options to reset a password, create a new administrator or convert a current user to an administrator.
9. You will then have the option to install there after.
10. Reboot, and changes will be applied.

3. With Offline NT Password Disk (Google Cache)
Offline NT Password Disk is a very simple and very fast command line Linux tool to reset your forgotten Windows administrator password. At the time of this writing the site was down, hence the Google Cache link.
1. Download the bootable CD image.
2. Burn the ISO to a CD with one of the ISO burning applications, as we stated before.
3. Boot up your PC with the bootable CD.
4. Drivers for both SATA and IDE drivers typically load automatically.
5. Select the location of your Windows Operating System.
6. Select windows/system32/config as your directory.
7. Select “Password Reset” as your option.
8. I would recommend to reset as a ‘blank password’. This works best.
9. Once blanked, press ‘q’ to quit and write the values to the registry.
As you can see, the dread of forgetting your Windows administrator password can typically be put behind you. These are just a few of the options to reset that hard to remember nemesis, but they are a few of the simplest.
Give us some of your best options for resetting your Windows passwords.

Optimize Your Operating System

The first thing you want to do if you have an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) operating system install is to go download PC Decrapifier. For example HP puts a pre-registered OS on their computers with the HP tools.

PC Decrapifier will remove the unwanted garbage that is preloaded by the manufacturer. The download link:

http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/

The next thing you will want to do is clean up the registry from all those programs you just uninstalled. There are tons of great paid for tools to do this but Im going to keep this as cheap as possible for you. Wise Registry Cleaner can do this for you. It supports 64-bit Vista and XP operating systems which alot dont. The download link:

http://www.wisecleaner.com/

The registry is essentially the heart of the Windows Operating system. Which means if a program you use messes something up or you miss something in the registry cleaning program that is vital to your operating system and its stability you may need to reinstall the entire operating system to fix the issue. However there is a program that one of the members brought to my attention. It creates a backup of your registry so that if anything does go wrong you use the backup and put everything in place as it was before you cleaned it. This program also offers options to restore the registry back to the original settings in the off chance that your system becomes unbootable in safe mode. This program is called ERUNT and comes in many different languages for all users. The download link:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Next thing you will want to do is have a tool to uninstall the programs that you install if you decide they arent for you. Basically what they do is they run the programs default uninstall tool and then scan the registry for left over references so you dont have to run a registry cleaner after every uninstall you do. There are tons of programs that do this such as Your Uninstaller 2008 (which I use) but its a paid program. You can use Revo Uninstaller. Its the best free Uninstall manager I have found. The download link:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/

After that you should manage your start up programs that start when you boot up. I used the built in start up manager in Spybot Search and Destroy. Thats about all its good for. Or you can use Start Up Control Panel made by Mike Lin. It also works very well and isnt complicated. The key here is to get rid of anything and everything you possibly can do without at the startup of your system to speed things up. You dont need to use this tool if your comfortable with using the built in start up manager in CCleaner or if you dont want duplicate programs to perform the same task. The download link:

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Another good program is made by Sysinternals. Its called AutoRuns. Its alot more advanced than the other programs, but is effective and does much more than manages start up programs. The download link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb963902.aspx

Now on for optimizing the Windows Services that start up with Windows. Some of them are un-needed and others are security loop holes. For this I use a website called BlackViper. It has different configurations for each OS (2000 and up) and the Windows Services that start with each. I used the "tweaked" category to optimize my Vista OS on my laptop and havent had any problems yet. Now you need to realize that what someone may consider un-needed another may rely upon. You can choose to tweak each one or leave it alone. This is just a guide for the average user. The website link:

http://www.blackviper.com/

When you install Microsoft Windows Vista you may not need all its Services to be running. If you are a tweak enthusiast you can always use Services to make the changes. Black Vipers is a great guide to help you. However, the problem here is how we can do it in a safe way, because tweaking Windows services in a wrong way may lead to many problems like failure in launching some Windows applications, Performance problems, Security risks or in some cases a total system crash.

This is were Vista Services Optimizer comes into place. Vista Services Optimizer is a free tweaking utility that can help you tweak Windows services in an automatic and a very safe way according to the way you use your computer and which software are installed on your system.

Vista Services Optimizer also enables you to tweak Windows Vista services manually for advanced users who need more control over Windows services in an easy and safe way. It provides you with detailed information about certain services and enables you to query some services information using Google or Yahoo search engine to help you identify some of Windows services function. This requires Windows .Net Framework 3.5 to be installed. The download link:

http://smartpcutilities.bravehost.co...optimizer.html

Windows .Net Framework 3.5:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

After that you will need to restart and see how your OS reacted to all the changes. After you are back into your operating system you will want to clean up unnecessary files and defragment the drive.

To clean up I use CCLeaner as many of you do. Just run that and you should be fine.

To defrag the hard drive you have millions of free ware defraggers available. JKDefrag is the preferred application here. It has a minimalistic GUI, but is extremely fast and it works. The download link:

http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/

GUI for JKDefrag:

http://www.emro.nl/freeware/

Other things you may want to do:

-Enable write caching on disk.

To do this you go into 'My Computer' and right click on your OS partition and go into the properties. Go to the hardware tab at the top and select the hard drive from the list. Usually there will be a few things in there which will include virtual drives and CD/DVD readers. After you select it hit the properties tab. Go into the policy tab and check the box that says 'Enable Write Caching on Disk' and then check the box under it that says 'Enable Advanced Performance'.

-Disable 8.3 File Name Creation, Enable Boot Defrag, and Increase NTFS Performance by Disabling LATS (Last Access Time Stamp)

For this I use a program called TweakVI. Its a paid program if you want all the plug ins, but for the standard program its free. You can do these by altering the registry, but I dont want to be responsible for others messing up their computers. Install TweakVI and go to the left hand side. There will be some tabs there. Go into the System Information and Tweaks tab. And then on the right hand side will be some topics. Click on the second one that says Hard Drive Info. At the top will be some tabs. Click the tab that says Hide Disc Drives/Hard Drive Tweaks. Check the boxes that say Disable 8.3 File Name Creation, Enable Boot Defrag, and Increase NTFS Performance by Disabling LATS (Last Access Time Stamp), apply and your done.

-Make Vista Shutdown Services Faster

This is a registry tweak. You need to open regedit via the run option. You open the run box, type in regedit, and press enter. Your registry should appear. Next you need to navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l

You should see a key titled 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' with a default value of 20000. Thats in milliseconds so it would be 20 seconds. You can change this value to as low as you want, but cant go under a 4 digit number. The lower the number the faster your computer will shut down. I have mine set at 2000. So its 2 seconds. The recommended value for this is 5000.

After you run that you should be on your way to installing your operating system windows updates and any software you use.

Identifying an unknown device in the device manager (XP/Vista)

Identifying an unknown device in the device manager (XP/Vista)
Written by JohnDough

Here's a good way to identify uninstalled devices in the devicemanager. This works on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista. In this example the device is already installed as you can see, but it still works.

Open the devicemanager (I assume we all know how...) and right-click on the unidentified/uninstalled device and open properties. In my example it will not be an unknown device, but you'll get the idea.

In the properties, click the tab details.

Select the device instance ID or hardware ID. In the example you'll see a long line with alot of gibberish. What we are looking for are the codes for VEN and DEV. These stand for vendor and device. As you can see in the example, the vendor is 11D4 and the device is 1981.

Next, open the following website: http://www.pcidatabase.com/

In the Vendor Search bar, enter the vendor ID, so in this case 11D4, and hit search. You'll get a searchresult, click it. Next, hit Ctrl + F (or whatever triggers the searchfunction in the browser you use) and put in the device ID. Search for the device.

Once identified, it should be easy to find a working driver for XP or Vista. This is especialy helpfull when you want to downgrade your Vista notebook or PC to Windows XP.

There are some exceptions though, which might be worth mentioning. Quick-keys on notebooks usually do not have a standard device ID. Also some power-saving CPU functions will not show a vendor and device code. These will usually show up as ACPI device. Google will help you out though. If the device is listed as an ACPI\AWY0001, stop looking, there is no driver for that. Fortunately it is also not a critical component and your system will not explode if you don't install it.

Converting video files to Ipod Format. Avi, Mkv, Xvid

  4. Converting .Avi
  5. Converting .MKV

Download Links

Download These then follow Instructions below on Installation

XviD4PSP - http://www.winnydows.com/e107_files/..._5036_full.exe - The main converting program.

MKVToolnix - http://bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtool....9.7-setup.exe - This is for playing around with .MKV files, we will use this to extract subtitles.

MKVExtract GUI - http://coreforge.org/frs/download.ph...UI-1.6.4.1.zip - This makes extracting subtitles a fair amount easier.

Installing the programs

Install the first 2 programs (XviD4PSP, MKVToolnix)

With MKVExtract GUI just unzip it, then copy the .exe into the MKVToolnix directory (default is C:\Program Files\MKVtoolnix)

Before You Start

If you plan on Converting something like a Tv Show. I would Recommend making the filename Shorter so that the whole filename can be viewed on the Ipod/Iphone (E.g. if the name of the file is "Clash.Of.The.Titans.Season.1.Episode.1.avi" this will be to long and you will not be able to see on the Ipod/Iphone what episode it is. I would rename it to something like this "0101 Clash of the Titans" so you can easily identify what Episode or Season) You wont need to do this if you are only doing one episode though.

Converting .AVI Files

1. Open up Xvid4PSP

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 1280x800.

2. Click "Open" and choose your file. You will then be able to preview the file you have just opened.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 897x590.

3. To the left of the video output, you will see Format, Choose "MP4 iPod Touch" as the format.

4. Make sure that both Denoise/Sharpen and Brightness/Contrast are set to Disabled. This is the default setting anyway. You can change this if you want to play around, but it's probably not a good idea

5. With Audio Encoding, choose "AAC-LC ABR 128k"

6. Choose "Save" and select the location you want to output the file to.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 899x594.

7. If you have more than 1 file that you would like to do, i.e, you just downloaded a whole series, click "Open" and repeat steps 3-6. Most likely you will just need to repeat step 6 since it saves your format settings. You will see a list of all files ready for conversion, once you're ready go to step 8.

8. Click "Encode" and it will begin to do its work. After this has completed, open up itunes or whatever you use and copy over the new file(s). Voila! It's done.

Converting .MKV Files

Most new anime coming out these days is encoded in superior h264 quality using the Matroska Video container format. The subtitles for this file format aren't hardsubs, they are softsubs which are seperate included inside the .MKV file. Much like a zip file.

iPods don't like softsubs, so we need to "Burn In" or "Hardcode" the subtitles into the video streams. This is pretty easy to do but requires a few extra steps than just normal AVI Files.

1. First up, we are going to have to 'extract' the subtitles. To do this you will need to navigate explorer to C:\Program Files\MKVtoolnix. You should have MKVExtractGUI.exe in that directory, if you don't copy it in there now.

2. Open MKVExtractGUI, in there you will see "Input". Next to it there will be a '...' button, use this to open the file you want to watch on your ipod.

3. After a slight pause, under content you will see a list with "Track ID 1: Video" etc... Put a tick next to the one that says "Track ID 3: subtitles (S_TEXT/ASS)". It may not be number 3, but that doesn't matter.

4. Click the "Extract" Button. It will pop up a window saying "Files Demuxed Successfully!". This will create a file which will have a filename identical to your .mkv file, for instance if your anime file was 'daisuki.mkv' then you will have a file in the same directory 'daisuki.ass'

5. Open up Xvid4PSP and follow steps 2 - 5 above for AVIs. Don't save it yet.

6. Click "Subtitles" then click "Add". and open up the ".ASS" file that you extracted in step 4.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 857x582.

7. You can now preview your new movie with added subtitles.

8. Click "Save" and choose where you will want to save the converted movie.

9. You can do more than one video at onces, just follow steps 2-8.

9. Click "Encode" and it will do its stuff.

10. Copy them to your iPod Touch / iPhone and Voila! It should Work

Get old Add-ons to work with new Firefox

1. Open this link in Internet Explorer: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
2. Choose your Add-on you want and download it to your desktop.
3. It will be in a .xpi file and open with WinRAR, choose the install.rdf and open it directly no need to extract the files.
5. Just look for the code in install.rdf file: 2.4.1*

Picture on how it looks in install.rdf: Will add it later.

6. Then just change to the version of Firefox you got now, example the Add-on is for version 2.4.1 then change it to 3.5.9 or whatever you like.
I changed it to a later version that havent come out yet, so i dont need to change when the new update comes again.

Then press "X" close the install.rdf file, it will ask you to save, do that and then one question from WinRAR to.
The file "install.rdf" has changed.
Would you like to update it in the archive?
Press OK.
7. After that the Add-on is updated and you just have to take the .xpi file and just drop it over the Add-on bar, and the install will show.

P.S The install.rdf code is very different on other Add-ons so you need to look around in some and in others you'll find it directly! D.S

Hope i helped out with this guide i wrote by myself, but i learned it by another one in an different forum (Swedish forum).
So if you liked it, just hit the thanks button.

Speed up Firefox 3!

Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it's optimized for dialup connections). Here's how:

* Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Type "network.http" in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
* Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining' to "true"
* Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.

How to Download Video from You Tube

Here are a few ways to download videos from YouTube.I guess most of them will suffice ,please do comment if any of these don't work.

1. videodownloadx.com doesn’t have a lot of options, but it’s simple, and it works. It also enables you to share the YouTube video with your friends via e-mail. Unfortunately, all the files are called get_video, and you have to add the .flv extension manually.

videodownloadx.com

2. KeepVid is another simple site. No hassle, works not only for YouTube movies but for a number of other sites, including Google Video, MySpace Video, DailyMotion and others. Again, you have to add the .flv extension by hand.

keepvid.com

3. VideoDownloader is very similar to KeepVid, but supports even more video sharing sites, and it’s also available as a Firefox extension. Just like with KeepVid, all downloads are in .flv format. We recommend MediaCoder for free conversion.

4. YouTube Downloads takes the cake in the longest domain name contest. It also separates itself by using a proxy for downloading videos, which means that you might be able to get videos even if YouTube access is blocked at your workplace or in the country you live. Just search Google for YouTube videos, and copy/paste the URL into YouTube Downloads.

5. Zamzar is an online file format conversion site which can do a lot more than just converting YouTube videos to another format and downloading them to your hard drive, but it’s doing a great job so we had to include it here. Thoroughly tested by us and highly recommended. See the video of it in action here.

6. Another site from where you can download , steps are given on the site itself
